How to Get to Oita Prefecture

Oita city (Oita prefecture), which will host the Rugby World Cup in 2019 is located on the North-Eastern section of the island of Kyushu. Oita Airport is the main commercial airport in Oita Prefecture, and has daily flights to and from Tokyo for about 1 hour 30 minutes. Oita is accessible from Osaka, either taking a by flight for about 55 minutes or by rapid train and a bullet train for about 3 hours 30 minutes.

From Tokyo

1 Hour 30 Minutes from Tokyo, Haneda Airport – Oita Airport

Oita-Haneda runs about 14 flights in total per day, operated by Japan’s national airlines such as JAL and ANA, or the more budget-friendly airline: Solaseed Air.

1 Hour 40 Minutes from Tokyo, Narita Airport – Oita Airport

Oita-Narita runs about 3 flights in total per day, operated by Jet Star Japan.

From Osaka

55 Minutes from Osaka International Airport(Itami)– Oita Airport

Oita-Itami runs about 7 flights in total per day, operated by Japan’s national airlines such as JAL and ANA, and more budget-friendly airline: IBEX.

Flights are also available from Nagoya Centrair Airport (Aichi Prefecture.)

Getting to Oita City Centre from Oita Airport

By Bus

Take the airport limousine bus to Oita station for about 65 minutes.
Fare: 1,550yen

By Train

From Osaka

3 Hours 30 Minutes from Shin-Osaka Station to Oita Station

Take the JR Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka station to Kokura station for about 2 hours 15 minutes, then take an Express Sonic train through JR Nippo line to Oita station for about 1 hour 18 minutes. This route is included under the Japan Rail Pass.
Fare: ¥16,460〜
Note that Japan Rail Pass cannot be used for travel on Nozomi trains on the Tokaido. However, both Hikari and Sakura trains are covered by the pass. Either option will take about 2 hours 30 minutes – 3 hours.
