How to Get to Kumamoto Prefecture, Kumamoto City

Getting to Kumamoto city, situated a central part on Kyushu island, involves taking either a flight, or the bullet train from either Tokyo or Osaka. Many flights operate between the cities, taking only 1 hour 40 minutes from Tokyo, and just 1 hour 10 minutes from Osaka. By Shinkansen, the journey takes about 3 hours from Osaka.

Getting to Kumamoto City Centre from Kumamoto Airport

By Bus

Buses are available from Kumamoto Airport to Kumamoto Kotsu Centre from the airport, taking about 50 minutes and costing ¥730, or to Kumamoto station for about 1 hour and costing ¥800.

By Train

From Osaka

3 Hours from Shin-Osaka Station to Kumamoto Station

Take the JR Sanyo / Kyushu Shinkansen directly to Kumamoto station for about 3 hours, covered by Japan Rail Pass.
Fare: ¥18,020〜
Note that Japan Rail Pass cannot be used for travel on Nozomi and Mizuho trains. However, Sakura trains are valid under this pass. If you choose Sakura, this will take about 3 hours 20 minutes.
