How to Get to Fukuoka Prefecture, Fukuoka City

Getting to Fukuoka City, the largest city in Kyushu, is simple either by flight or bullet train (Shinkansen) from Tokyo or Osaka. Many flights operate between the cities, taking only about 1 hour 35 minutes from Tokyo, or 1 hour 10 minutes from Osaka. By Shinkansen, it takes about 4 hours and 50 minutes from Tokyo, or 2 hours and 30 minutes from Osaka.

By Plane

From Tokyo

1 Hour 35 Minutes from Tokyo, Haneda Airport – Fukuoka Airport

Haneda-Fukuoka is a busy route, offering about fifty flights per day, operated by Japan’s national airlines such as JAL and ANA, and the more budget-friendly airlines, Star Flyer and Skymark.

2 Hours from Tokyo, Narita Airport – Fukuoka Airport

Narita-Fukuoka offers about thirteen flights per day, operated by Japan’s national airlines such as JAL and ANA, and LCCs, Jetstar Japan and Peach Aviation.

From Osaka

1 Hour 10 Minutes from Osaka International Airport(Itami)– Fukuoka Airport

Itami-Fukuoka offers about nine flights per day, operated by Japan’s national airlines such as JAL and ANA, and the more budget-friendly airline, IBEX.

1 Hour 15 Minutes from Kansai International Airport – Fukuoka Airport

Kansai-Fukuoka offer about seven flights per day, operated by Japan’s national flags such as JAL and ANA, and LCCs, Jetstar Japan and Peach Aviation.

Getting to Fukuoka City Centre from Fukuoka Airport

It takes only 5 minutes to Hakata or 11 minutes to Tenjin, two major subway stations in Fukuoka City. Either destination will cost ¥260.

By Train

From Tokyo

4 Hours 50 Minutes from Tokyo Station to Hakata Station

Take the JR Tokaido / Sanyo Shinkansen directly to Hakata station for about 4 hours 50 minutes, covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
Fare: ¥21,810〜
Note that Japan Rail Pass cannot be used for travel on Nozomi trains on the Tokaido. However, both the Hikari and Sakura trains are included under the pass. If you take the Hikari or the Sakura, you will transfer at Shin-Osaka station, taking about 5 hours 30 minutes – 6 hours total.

From Osaka

2 Hours 30 Minutes from Shin-Osaka Station to Hakata Station

Take the JR Sanyo / Kyushu Shinkansen directly to Hakata station for about 2 hours 30 minutes, covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
Fare: ¥14,480〜
Note that JR Pass cannot be used for travel on either the Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen. However, both the Hikari and the Sakura trains are included under the pass. If you either Hikari or the Sakura, it will take about 2 hours 40 minutes – 3 hours.
